New Years Eve 2013 in 'Nellie's'
New Years Eve, early evening 2013 about 1630
I wrote about this place on 2nd February 2013 in a Tripadvisor report. I have reproduced this here:
'The place to drink in ALL of England' The White Horse Inn or more fondly known as 'Nellie's in Beverley'
"What better experience on a cold and bitter windswept day in January, when the snow is falling and the shops are deserted, than to venture into The White Horse Inn in Beverley and sit by a roaring fire, viewing your pint of chocolate stout by gas light. Don't do this on your own by the way, always go with friends but be fully prepared to interact with the locals and have an afternoon to remember. The only problem of course is having to drive home afterwards (to avoid arguments, draw the short straw on entry to the bar and not on leaving) but then if highly organised you can book local accommodation. Now back to the ambience, the atmosphere, the subtle gas lighting and the aged and wonderful furniture. After several beers you really won't want to leave and you will have made several new friends. On the downside the toilets really are bad but all can be forgiven as there are so many positives. A note to the management - never change anything if you want to retain your customers (apart from the toilets). On a previous visit I noticed that a few of the old stained pictures had been replaced by newer versions. This is not on! Leave well alone. The furniture too, makes the place. The older, the better. We like woodworm, old varnish and wear. The more mis-matched the chairs the more comfortable and acceptable. 'Nellie's' is a mix of the Eighteenth, Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries. Never let the mid to late Twentieth get a look in, and definitely not the Twenty First. When the gas lights go, the people go! Be warned!"
This evening I could only have one beer and stay only one hour, but the atmosphere was the same. The outside air temperature was unusually high for this time of the year.
