Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

Mr. Fun's Birthday

(This is back-blipped because we have very little Internet connection at our place on the Central Coast)

We woke on the Central Coast of California to lots of wind stirring our little vacation community, Cayucos, this morning.

Our daughter, Deidre and her husband (Deed & John) stayed at their motel because she wasn't feeling well. We stayed at our little shack, cottage, place (whatever it is) at the beach and had breakfast (they had been invited to stay with us, but they chose something a bit more private for the two of them).

Our daughter and son-in-law have been separated for 18 months (we're not even sure, but they might be divorced--we don't ask questions, because parents don't do that--kids do). Anyway, we are cheering their reconciliation, which seems like a miracle, but we don't even ask what they are doing or if they are reconciling. We believe it is just none of our business.

For Mr. Fun's birthday we, the four of us, went to the Cass House for dinner. Mr. Cass founded this little beach town a long time ago:

"James Cass built his house in stages between 1867 and 1875, at the time it served as the hub of all cultural and social life in Cayucos. In 1993, after a 12 year period of abandonment, Gary & Nancy Bagnall bought the property and spent 14 years meticulously restoring the house to it’s original splendor, with the intention of turning it into a boutique hotel and restaurant. With the same passion that James Cass invested in building the house, the Bagnalls made sure no detail was overlooked before opening its doors to the public in the summer of 2007."

We had a 7:00 pm dinner reservation for four. We were told that it would be a 12 course meal and it was. We had selected this place, even though it meant murdering the piggy bank, because the Cass House serves abalone from the local Cayucos Abalone Farm -- please scroll to the bottom of the link and look at the photo.

Mr. Fun has spoken about abalone so many times after reading many of John Steinbeck's books that I decided this was the birthday to let him taste abalone. We did and it was delicious. I think our daughter was as much or more excited and in "awe" of the whole experience as we were and that made the entire adventure just that much more meaningful.

Birthdays are worth celebrating -- so we did.
Happy Birthday Mr. Fun!

Good night from the cold and windy Central Coast of California,
Rosie (& Mr. Fun), aka Carol
