Messiah and a Meal

A fringe benefit of living where I now do is having a neighbor such as Betsy S-W (standing, at left). Betsy plays viola with our local Whatcom Symphony Orchestra, teaches viola and violin from her house, sings and directs the 50 member choir at her church, and has not only a piano but also a harpsichord in her living room. Needless to say, she and I have a few common interests.

This evening, she and her hubbie Jim hosted their annual holiday Messiah Singalong at their house which they had custom designed with acoustics and choral and orchestral events in mind. A few violin playing friends, along with a few friends from WSO were among the musicians performing. Thirty five members of her choir were present, along with me and Rich, and together, we belted out the entire Handel Messiah, cover to cover. Believe it or not, I have never sung Messiah before, so it was an evening of sight-singing for me. What fun this was, and what wonderfully interesting neighbors!

All this music worked up our appetites and Jim and Betsy had quite a spread ready and waiting for the hungry singers and musicians. Ample wine and spirits were also on hand and a good time was certainly had by all. With any luck, next year I will be prepared enough to join in with my cello. That's my goal.
