Wooden Toys
Typically, modern toys are made of plastic. As you can see from the wooden toys on top of the shelf, they are mostly from years gone by, though the classics have stayed. You can see an abacus and crokinole board in the center. This board is from my parents, a game which I played as a young person. I got fairly good at it and could beat most of my friends, but not my dad! The boxes on the left-hand side are containers for modern-day games. Before the days of lego, we built some pretty creative things with tinker toys! And, wooden blocks became teaching aids for the alphabet and numbers. The Russian Matryoshka nesting dolls are hand painted, something I had wanted as a child, but did not get until I was an adult and found one in a second-hand shop.
The wooden gecko is a souvenir from our first trip to Hawaii. I wish I was there today. We have more very cold and snowy weather combined with treacherous driving conditions.
