Unexpected company and an unexpected treat
My friend phoned this afternoon. She had to drop off her daughter somewhere, could she come over for tea afterwards. Which fortunately gave me plenty of time to tidy up and light some candles for a bit of Christmas atmosphere.... (I don't have any decorations this year).
This is the friend who provided us with an English tea the other day. This time she brought another treat. On New Years Eve the Dutch eat oliebollen, which translated would be something like oilballs..., balls of dough are thrown into hot oil and fried. We eat them traditionally with powdered sugar. My father used to be in the kitchen for a long time on the day of New Years Eve to make them. Some he would fill with apple, my favourite. Unfortunately those balls with apple are hardly sold anywhere in Holland... But now my friend made them for me! And she also made some with pineapple, with dried apricot and with banana. I already had some, they are delicious!
