Horfield Prison.
We had breakfast before The Old Lady awoke this morning and then went out for a walk. It was a journey of discovery of things we had forgotten, aka things that we should have learnt at our mother's knee - but didn't. We passed Bishop Road Primary School (featured in one of my early blips) whose ex-pupils include: Nobel laureate - Paul Dirac, Archibald Leitch - aka Cary Grant and, of course, TOL.
Next door to the school is this prison, for some strange reason, the main gate has been blocked off by this brick wall surmounted by an iron fence. Careful scrutiny will reveal both the barbed wire and a couple of ancient security cameras above the perimeter wall.
TOL recalls running past on her way to school after two prisoners had escaped, just in case there was a third inmate scrambling over the wall; she also remembers scurrying past on the last occasion that a prisoner was hanged here - a sobering thought bearing in mind our modern values.
