Report on the aftermath

The floods have receded and the devastation can now be assessed. Behind me one can see the sad sight of a narrow boat that has given in to the fast flow of the River Wey that took place this Christmas Day. The tow path is now accessible although little of the original path material remains with deep funnelling of the sandy soil and part of the bank subsided into the river.

Further along to the centre of Guildford town one can see the flood line in many places that reminds us to what level the ferocious waters rose - several feet high. Benches have been ripped from their anchors and the water is still raging through the weir near Town Lock. The George Abbott PH still remains closed having sustained flooding as has many other areas of the town, including the Law Courts, many office buildings and the auction rooms.

With luck the water levels will return and less rainfall will occur on Monday when the next stormy weather is forecast to take place.
