Katherine Mansfield Statue

We woke to a day of grey skies, rain, lots of it and cold gusty winds. There was no way we could carry out our planned Blip-Meet and photographic foray along the Wellington Waterfront. There was a flurry of text messages between the affected parties around 6.am. Tentative plans were made for tomorrow. Then it was back to bed for a sleep-in.
Later Keith, Steve Emily and I took the train trip into town and made a run through heavy rain to Wagamama’s, a well-known noodle restaurant on the waterfront. After a very tasty meal there the others left to go home and I took off on a walk through down-town Wellington. I headed to Wellington Photographic Supplies and there purchased my Christmas present, (Keith yet to pay….) a carry bag for my tripod.
However despite the wind and rain there was plenty to blip in downtown Wellington. Buildings, old and new, decorative storm-water drain covers, people and statues. I was spoiled for choice.
Eventually I chose this work of art portraying a ‘Woman of Words’, a three metre high sculpture commemorating the life and work of Wellington and New Zealand’s most internationally recognised literary figure, Katherine Mansfield. This sculpture was erected in Midland Park on Lambton Quay in Wellington last May... The statue, by sculptor Virginia King, is the fruit of three years’ work between the Wellington Sculpture Trust, the Katherine Mansfield Society and the Wellington City Council. Katherine Mansfield’s words – from her journals and stories – are cut into the sculpture and at night the light from within the sculpture makes those words come to life. Even her hair is made up of shopping lists found in her journals. I was fascinated with this wonderful memorial to an extraordinarily talented writer.
Fingers crossed for better weather tomorrow and hopefully a meeting with other Blippers.
We are meeting at 10.am in the foyer of Te Papa. We extend an invitation to any other Blippers/photographers to join us there.
