A Tale of Two Thimbles

Buying studio equipment can cost a small fortune.
A month or so ago Margaret built me a lightbox which is as perfect as a professional unit.
Building on this idea we created a background box which has removable bases and backs and will take any number of combinations.
Yesterday's was a dark cork background and today I tried a black background with 2 of Margaret's thimbles and a tea cup from a doll's house. I used a long exposure as opposed to flash.
What I like about creating your own backdrops is that you have an infinite amount of textures and colors and because I am using paper, cloth , cork or fabric materials the backgrounds always have some light and dark in them, even when you are using black. And if I can get the exposure right I can have some shadow to make the subject stand out. This makes for a far more interesting photograph.
The next step is to use this technique for a portrait setting !!!
