Maryhill Locks

Popularly known locally as the Botany (pronounced Butny), it was from these Glasgow locks that Scottish criminals/rebels/mis-fits were transported to Australia. Though in the heart of the city of Glasgow, miscreants were put on barges here and transferred to ships at Bowling on the Clyde, so did not set foot on dry land between here and Botany Bay, Australia ... hence the name here. Or so the story goes. Today, there was a stillness that belied the history and its associated sadness.
