The Things You Learn
Continuing the theme of "The Fun Just Never Starts", I had a German lesson today.
3 hours of it. Reading out loud, what verbs go with what prepositions, what nouns go with prepositions and all sorts of other goodies. Got a big load of stuff for homework and some tips on my pronunciation.
By the end of the three and a bit hours, I was knackered.
I collect trivia. Odd facts intrigue me and can lodge in my brain to the detriment of other useful information - like where I live or, very fitting for today, where is my watch? But today's little nugget is a belter - hands up everyone who knew that the company who make Persil (yep, the washing powder/gel/tablets) had their own whaling fleet?
It's true. In the 1930s they had a whaling fleet, right up until 1939. They needed the fat to make the soap.
And as far as I know, they don't have one today.
