The Bucket List
My Papa is an incredible man. He made a bucket list a long time ago that I've heard about on several occasions. Today I actually witnessed him complete an item on the list. Every Thursday my grandmother is at my house cooking and watching Jack while my parents are at work. So around 6oclock the phone rings:
-Oh you're coming to wantagh? Where are you now?
*answer that i can't hear*
- Wantagh avenue? Oh then i'll see you in 5 minutes
*he answers*
-What do you mean 45? Is it that badly backed up?
*reply*
-WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU'RE WALKING ARE YOU CRAZY.
So i guess i should add here that my grandparents live in Huntington on the north shore of long island...I live in wantagh on the south side. Its approx a 40 minute drive...My Papa, a 70 year old man left his house at around 1pm today without telling anyone of his plan to walk to my house. His reason? It is on his bucket list. It was not a nice day out today. It was very chilly and windy. So my grandmother says shes coming to get him and he refuses saying he won't get in the car if she does and he's made it this far so let him finish. She obliged. Around 7:00 we recieved another call. He has stopped to take a break on Jerusalem Avenue approx 5 minute walk from my house. I decided to bring him water since he was close enough and hopped on my bike to deliver it. I find him walking into my neighborhood His sweatshirt saftey pinned shut (the zipper was broken and he couldnt find another sweatshirt). I asked him if he drank anything. Yes Ensure and he ate an apple too! He shows me the contents of his pockets 1) his bucket list 2) a box of bandaids 3) money 4) his ID and his medical card 5) his heart medicine.
We walked the last 200 meters together and placed bets on how much pain he would be in tomorrow and how much trouble he would be in with my grandma. (BIG TIME) This is him across the street from my house 20 feet away from the end of a long journey
A 7 hour 15 minute journey, 18+ miles, one 70 year old man. Truly amazing. I love him and am so proud of him<3
