Antarctic King Crab

I was a little shocked when I saw this Antarctic King Crab on sale in the local supermarket today. As I watched people buying big stacks of them I had the sinking feeling that we must be about to wipe out this species because it was available in a major supermarket in Australia.

Turns out its quite the opposite

Due to global warming and the subsequent warming of the sea water in the southern ocean large numbers of these crabs are now entering into pristine areas of Antarctica that have never seen this kind of predator. The creatures there have no defence and the crabs are wreaking havoc!

I guess this is something to do with why we are now seeing them in the supermarket!
