Banksia grandis

I think the leaves of this plant are as attractive as the flowers, even though it has magnificent candle-like inflorescences. This whirl of new foliage is light brown in colour, but the leaves will darken and turn green as they grow larger.

I think our plant struggles a bit, as it is subjected to strong, southerly winds at times. Banksia grandis is native to south-western Australia, where it is apparently quite common. It needs well-drained soils, and doesn't tolerate wet summers. Our sloping section probably suits it quite well, but my guess is it would do better if it were on a warmer, more sheltered site. Nevertheless, it is growing well at present, and producing lots of flowers.
