Practical

economics. A list of prices compiled by my Dad in June 1954.

Bird's Custard was 1/6 and a ha'penny. Baby food (I was six months old) was sevenpence ha'penny. You could find 7 lbs of potatoes for 1/4. This would have been in Granchester, where we lived while he sold wine to the Cambridge Colleges.

In a letter from my grandmother the following year, I see that furnished accommodation for a young married couple (my uncle and his bride) in Baghdad (he worked for Euclid, supplying earth moving and other plant, to oil and other companies) was worth £800 a year.
