Bluebell Railway
We went with the grandchildren on a Christmas special trip on a steam train from Horsted Keynes Station, East Sussex. As someone who remembers travelling steam trains as a child, it brought back memories of the steam and noise.
The station at Horsted Keynes is one of the best restored Victorian stations in the world. It has five platforms and waiting rooms with coal fires. For these special trips, the volunteers who run the station were in Victorian dress and there were Victorian games to play whilst we waited for the train. All really well done. Then the train arrived and we took occupancy of our own compartment in one of the carriages built around 1900 and lovingly restored with richly varnished woodwork and brightly polished brass fittings. A hamper of food and drink was waiting for us. All in all an excellent event, enjoyed by all.
This is just one of the huge collection of steam locomotives that the Bluebell Railway has been collecting and restoring since 1960.
