The Gap
The Gap is a tricky and dangerous thing. It is that space between the train door and the platform. It isn't that large, however, it may as well be as large as the Grand Canyon. I watched it swallow a passenger's smart phone this afternoon. The train was approaching and the passenger was walking toward the edge of the platform. All it took was one slip. The phone freed itself from the man's headphones and jumped down into the deep crevasse known as the Gap. In the past, I have seen it eat toddler's shoes and claim stroller wheels. It's wise to mind the gap. Now I'm going to wonder if there is some way that guy can get his phone back up out of the Gap... When I was a kid, The Gap (the store) had a catchy little commercial which wooed you to "Fall into the Gap!" If you look closely at the sign, you'll notice that Gap is capitalized. Really. It's as if the Gap is a living, breathing thing, like a person. I guess it really is. After all, if you give it a chance, it will eat ANYTHING you happen to feed it!
