Dribs and Drabs of 2014

Now where did I leave those nuts???

Today's never-ending snowfall (the squirrel is standing atop 4-6 inches of fresh snow) brought out a pleasant surprise - red squirrels. Up until a few summers ago grey squirrels (black or grey in colour and 2-3x the size of this one) had not made it to Nova Scotia. They're voracious, bastard rodents that tend to outcompete native species. The past few summers I've stopped seeing/hearing red squirrels, but see the odd grey jump through the trees. Today there were two red squirrels bouncing around the back deck stealing peanuts from the blue jay feeder. I'm sure the greys are out there. somewhere, but I'm glad to see a fee hearty reds are still holding strong.
