Famous
Denny Hulme, son of a famous NZ soldier (winner of the Victoria Cross while fighting in the Battle of Crete) was a famous NZ racing car driver. Driving for Brabham, he won the Formula One championship in 1967, the only New Zealander to do so. The following year, he moved to the McLaren Team, owned by fellow New Zealander Bruce McLaren, who was if anything more famous in New Zealand than Hulme. Despite difficulties with the cars, Hulme did well in 1968.
In 1970 Bruce McLaren was killed in a crash while testing a new Can-Am car. Hulme drove the Can-Am cars for McLaren from 1966 until 1972. In 1967 Bruce McLaren won the Can-Am championship from Hulme, who won it in 1968. 1969 was their top year with either McLaren or Hulme winning every race, and the other finishing second.
This was Hulme's car (I don't know from which year).
It is in a large showroom on Great North Road, near Ponsonby Road, as part of the promotion for McLaren cars, being sold to the public in a new car franchise. I find it strange as NZ roads are not designed for such fast cars, and the speed limit precludes driving them fast anyway.
Reflected in the plate glass window is a car yard on the other side of Great North Road. That car yard is not as famous.
