A Fish With No Name
So the weekend before last (7th + 8th) I was feeling pretty down after our house deal fell through. I almost had my land so I could start doing some gardening/farming. Mr. Badger got me an early Christmas present - a mini aquaponics tank :3 If you are unaware of aquaponics (one of the many projects I want to take on at my future little farm) it is the combination of hydroponics (growing plants in copious amounts of water) and aquaculture (fish farming). These two practices have their issues - hydroponics uses an awful lot of water and aquaculture produces a lot of fish poopies. Combine the two, and you have aquaponics. While still not perfect, it is getting closer to a system that is symbiotic - the fish makes with the poopies and the plants suck up those nutrients to grow. The fish is not living in its own filth and the plants are not starving for nutrition. I would love to do this on a larger scale with some tilapia when I have the space so we'll be able to harvest both veggies/fruits/herbs and fish. For now, this is a fun little experiment :) As you can see, the wheat grass I planted just a week ago has already grown quite high. I am still waiting on the basil I also planted. Now for a name for my little betta ...
