A WELL responsible for the Capital's first ever piped water supply has been officially recognised as a building of historical significance.
Commissioned 350 years ago to collect spring waters from across the city, the small stone bothy in Comiston then piped supplies to a reservoir at Edinburgh Castle.
Until the 1950s, inlet pipes for each spring were decorated with lead sculptures including a fox, hare, swan and peewit. They were removed for safe keeping and are now displayed in the Museum of Edinburgh in the Canongate.
