Tales from the Old Mills

By Oldmills

Abraham Carpenter.

I dont know what caught my eye, to pique my interest- the military bearing, the fastidious dress, or the symbol in his lapel where many men of his generation display a Pioneer Pin, which this clearly was not.
So, me being me, I asked.
"R.A.F.A.", Abraham Carpenter replied, soft voiced in the way only the self conciously hard-of -hearing sometimes do, "Royal Air Force Association".
Abraham, a 19 year old citizen of Saor Stat na hEireann, signed up in 1942, shipped out in convoy to the Far East, Burma first, then beyond, finally demobbing in January 1948, after, he says, "the Indians got rid of us".
I listened to some more stories, and plied him with an inappropriate, but heartfelt, gift, "A History of World War Two in Photos".
He could write a book of his own.
