Victorian Words of Wisdom

This is a sundial in People's Park, Halifax - a lovely little park that opened in 1857.
It is a classic Victorian park designed by Joseph Paxton (who designed the Crystal Palace, amongst others), and paid for by Sir Francis Crossley (of Crossley Carpet fame, who then donated the park to the people of Halifax.
They were a cheerful lot these Victorians.. This sundial is inscribed with such proclamations as :
"Boast not thyself of to-morrow"
"First the Hour, Then the Day, Steals away"
but my favourite:
"For on thy eyelids is the shadow of death"
All very uplifting!!!!
At least the sundial is still working :-)
