Frozen fingers
I was quite astonished this morning when I found this example of Clathrus archeri (also known as the devil's fingers or the octopus stinkhorn) with its red arms frozen into the ground. I've found this fungi (native to Australia and New Zealand) before but never later than October. In the ground next to this one are a number of the gelatinous eggs that the fruting body emerges from. I will revisit the spot to see if they survive the frost.
