The Eccleston House
With a fresh covering on snow today I went out to find some historically significant houses in the Oxford Village to blip. The gloaming of an early sunset added a diffused light.
On the corner of Ross St. and So. Washington stands the Eccleston House, one of the more humble of the 'significant' houses still being lived in. This Gothic Revival style was popular at the time.
The story behind it is that in 1851 Dr. Charles Eccleston, a dentist, and his bride were spending overnight on their honeymoon trip at a tavern and inn on the corner of Ross St. and South Washington. It burned to the ground in the night. Mrs. Eccleston was distraught at losing her entire trousseau. So, Dr. Eccleston gallantly offered to build her a house on the very spot. She selected the design from Godey's Ladies Book.
The house was completed in 1853.
[Of course the lighted Santa is a new addition]
