Bethlehem Story

Another improvement - Authentic fire roasted meat on a hand turned spit!
These residents of Bethlehem allowed me to watch (and that meant actually turn the spit with the three chickens on it) while they got into costume because fire code required someone to be with the real flames at all times. (VERY important with all the nearby straw and wood, even though this was in a fenced off area with a non flammable walking area).
There is an asbestos shield under the pea gravel and thick slab stone that forms the barbecue "pit". Ernie and a friend custom designed and welded this spit. It has a 6 inch metal strip running beneath the slab stone covered with coals. This strip helps hold the spit arms in place without them being "driven" into the asphalt.
The aroma of the roasting meat is sublime! They handed out small tastes of meat to visitors with their roasting forks.
