Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

The Kids, the Island, and the Sunset

This is our daughter and son-in-law on the sand at Newport Beach, California, with the sun going down behind Catalina Island.

A couple weeks ago the four of us had all scheduled a "play" date. Our son-in-law had a flight into Ontario International Airport late this morning from the San Francisco Bay area where he is currently living. We stopped at our daughter's condo to get them. They have been married 25 years, but currently they have been separated for about 18 months and this past month they have been "hanging-out" together whenever their schedules allow for it. We think our son-in-law is a great guy. We are hoping our daughter changes her mind and decides to stay married. The two of us are hoping for a permanent reconciliation for them.

Once the four of us were in the car, we were going to Orange County to attend a Scholastic Publishing Co book fair. Then we were headed to see the sunset at the Pacific. Afterward we went to the Spaghetti Bender, a great little family owned Italian restaurant. Not only is their pasta fabulous, but so are the salads and the soup.

After completely stuffing ourselves, we headed over to Roger's Gardens to see the "Christmas Shop," which is just delightful, if not a bit pricey. Their gardens are lovely too, but it was a bit too chilly to thoroughly enjoy the moment; we did wander through looking at all the plants and occasionally tucked into one of the indoor heated display rooms. I purchased a few things and then we were on our way to the Trader Joe's store on Pacific Coast Highway between Newport and Laguna Beach.

Once we got there, the kids headed into the neighboring Starbucks for a hot cup while we headed into Trader Joe's. I wanted to purchase several jugs of their super delicious spiced apple cider. Then we found the kids and then made the 45-minute drive back to the edge of Inland Empire where we live.

This has been a fun afternoon and evening. I still need to do some serious grading of student projects before Tuesday when I meet my classes for the final time this semester. So, I'm signing-off now to do that.

Good night from Southern California.
