Misty Morning Glasgow

After storm-tossed Thursday morning when traffic chaos ensued in Glasgow, the windless conditions today are a complete contrast. From the high vantage point of North Baljaffray, looking eastwards over suburban Bearsden, the northern areas of the city present a monchrome aspect, clothed in layers of mist as midday approaches. This is an unusual sight as the prevailing west wind usually disperses these conditions quite quickly.

Of course, it was very different in the days when thousands of industrial chimneys liberally belched smoke. Then thick choking smog engulfed the city for days on end. Thankfully all that has gone. The tall tower in the middle is the water-tower of Ruchill Hospital which was built at the end of the 19th century, but closed its wards in 1998. The buildings have not yet been demolished, but the red-brick water tower is A-listed and will be saved for posterity. At least, I hope so. It adds historic and visual interest to the vista!
