A year in Canada

Day 59 – Montreal

An earlier start this morning so we could go on a free walking tour of Montreal. The tour lasted around two hours and took us mainly through the Old Town and Old Port areas. This statue of Nelson atop a column is similar to the one in Trafalgar Square but smaller. The funny story is this column is around 200 years old. In more modern times the French Canadian citizens of the city realised they had not built any monuments to people from their history so in the 1930’s raised funds and on the opposite side of the square there is a much smaller statue to a French naval hero!
