What Are You Using for Bait?
This is a juvenile Green Heron. Greens are relatively small, shy fishing birds that are generally not easily spotted. They are active most noticeably around dawn and dusk. If you are fortunate enough to see one during the daylight hours it will probably be lurking in the shadows of overhanging bushes or underneath docks and bridges.
Having grown up in South Florida I am very familiar with the Green Heron, but must admit that I was not aware of it's Special Skill Set. Greens are one of the few species of animals known to use tools. According to Wikipedia..."they commonly use bread crusts, insects, or other items as bait. The bait is dropped onto the surface of a body of water in order to lure fish. When a fish takes the bait, the Green Heron will then grab and eat the fish". So Who Knew?
