You owe me five farthings

Actually the children’s rhyme (all about the gallows!) did not refer to this St Martin’s church. That was a St Martin church on Martin Lane that was burnt down in the Great Fire of London. Moneylenders traded in the area, hence the reference.

This is the tower of the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields at the corner of Trafalgar Square. A beautiful building, dating from 1726, it was just catching the sun as it was setting and as we went by this afternoon. We spent the morning with the grandchildren and then took the train into London - just because we could really! We didn’t go near Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park this time!
