To Admire a Picture
I inherited this picture. At the time I really only knew that it was painted by the artist James CHARLES (1851-1906)
I have subsequently done a lot of research into the artist, his works and his family.
This picture is called "Washing Day" and was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1882.
I can just about remember it hanging in the house of my grand-mother at Arnside in the 1960's.
Charles himself was associated with the New English Art Club and was one of the group of artists known as "plein-airistes" That is they took their inspiration from nature and painted their pictures outdoors.
