Delft Blue
We're on a daytrip to Delft, the place where we both studied and lived for a decade. We married there as well and haven't really been back since we moved from there. DJ has a meeting with study friends and I have been walking around and visiting places like the Prinsenhof, which was the court of Prince William the Silent, the founder of the Dutch line of later kings and queens.
I've also been to the new Vermeer centre and followed a great guided tour (as I was the only one to go on the tour this was like a private tour) about Vermeer, his techniques and the little that is known about his life.
Quick dash into the Nieuwe Kerk, (the New Church) too, this church is where
William the Silent is buried and after him almost all of the Dutch rulers and kings and queens. Tomorrow is the bicentennial celebration of the arrival of King William I in 1813 back in The Netherlands after more than a decade of banishment, after Napoleon's first defeat, the celebration of 200 years of the Dutch monarchy of the House of Orange-Nassau
Today's Colour Challenge colour is blue, and as I'm in Delft, what better than a Delft Blue image.
Taken at the special exhibition "Delft Blauw, Kunst of Kitsch" (Delft Blue, Art or Kitsch) in the Prinsenhof. Delft Blue is of course the blue and white earthenware produced in Delft since the 17th century.
The part you see here is a collection of delftware souvenirs against a background of a close up of the kissing delft blue farmer's couple in the exhibition, the part where they explain how a whole new generation of artists is working with the concept of Delft Blue.
By the way, if you want to see one of our fellow Blippers interpretation via photography, do have a look at hjarald's journal
