Splitgill
Hmmm! This is a fungus I don't think I've seen before - found on a fallen Willow tree this morning. I immediately wanted to call it 'Polar Bear's Paw'. Then I looked it up when I got home - it is Schizophyllum commune and has already been given the (I think rather prosaic) common name of Splitgill. If only they'd asked me! Anyway, I was quite pleased, but then read "Schizophyllum commune is a very common species of mushroom...It is the world's most widely distributed mushroom, occuring in every continent except Antarctica". I felt a bit deflated, but it's still an interesting fungus!
