Muttley's Musings

A Sad Day

Today was the day of my Granddad's funeral. It was a beautiful autumn day as we laid him to rest in the Churchyard where he once had his allotment. The church was pretty full with people who had come to pay their respects to him, which was heartening to see, and was much appreciated by our small family.

The vicar conducted a nice ceremony which he started with a slide show of pictures from Granddads life which I had put together. It raised a few smiles and a laugh or too as people remembered things about Granddad.

Afterwards we had refereshments in the church hall and it was nice to see people who I had not seen for quite a while with not living Yorkshire anymore, and we all had a good chat and remembered Granddad in different ways as he had touched our lives in so many different ways.

One of my school friends came to pay their respects which was nice and he told me a funny story about when my Granddad had gone to decorate his first cottage, about how he'd said that if the stair well was too high to paint safely to leave it, but Granddad took that as a challenge and he'd constructed a plank and ladder system to reach the top!

It was nice to get other peoples perspectives and memories of Granddad.

I will leave you with these words from the Order of Service

Gods Garden
God looked around His garden
And found an empty place,
He then looked down upon the earth
And saw your tired face.
He put His arms around you
And lifted you to rest,
God's garden must be beautiful
He always takes the best.
He saw the road was getting rough
And the hills were hard to climb,
So He closed your weary eyelids
And whispered, "Peace be thine."
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn't go alone,
For part of use went with you
The day God called you home.
