The brick maker
On the road to Madurai, passed a family by the side of the road and on the banks of a river. They extract the mud from the river bed and mix it with sand before 'throwing' it by hand into a mould, making four bricks at a time. They leave the bricks to dry in the sun before firing them in batches of 20,000 or more.
They pay tax to the government for extracting the mud ~5 rupees and sell the bricks (fired) for ~15 rupees. I have no idea of their other costs but it's a pretty hard life.
