The Bath Film Festival launched today with a screening of Dreyer's 'The Passion of Joan of Arc' in Bath Abbey, with a live musical score.

It's possible to argue that Bath Abbey is a strange choice of venue for such a profoundly humanistic and anti-church film, but there's no doubting its effectiveness. The music was composed by Adrian Utley of Portishead and Will Gregory of Goldfrapp, and was excellent. The star of the show was the film itself, which is shattering in its intensity.
