Summer heralds the arrival of the cockies
New migrants in Sydney often comment on the cockroaches they encounter in their houses: disgust on their faces (the speakers not the insects). It's a sad fact of life that cockies are our housemates here. They do get less disgusting over time as you accept the fact that what you can't change, you have to endure , but nothing is as horrendous as having a B52 fly into your face as you go outside to put out the garbage on a stifling summer night. A visit from the pest man will result in dying insects in every corner of the house, and then you won't see them for a while, until the first hot days of next November/December. You realise you can't win. You make another appointment with the pest man and hope that his remedy won't make you sick, as well.
