A sad goodbye... Or is it?
Guess where I've spent the day? Yes, back into Bristol to the flat!
The plan was to spend just an hour at the flat, waiting for people to collect the last two pieces of furniture, and then to hand the flat keys back tomorrow. However, to cut a very long story short, one of the buyers failed to make the necessary arrangements for collection. After three hours of waiting in a cold, empty flat we gave up and came home, leaving behind one very lonely, and very large chair. So now I need to come up with plan B and try and find another home for the chair, which I can probably do, but it does mean yet another trip back into Bristol next week.
Today you have yet another view of Colston Almshouse, and a potted history of St Michaels Hill:
"The timber-framed houses near to St Michael's church are shown almost at the edge of Millerd's 1673 map of the 'famous cittie of Bristoll and suburbs' describing this area as 'where ye riseing of ye hill St Michael being converted into comely buildings and pleasant gardens'.
The steep climb from the cramped alleys of the old city ensured that the area was high above the insalubrious dockside smells, while a step beyond lay the open countryside. To the merchants who moved to St Michael's Hill, it was 'an area blessed with wholesome draughts of healing air.'
Raised pavements were a common feature in the newer suburbs, keeping pedestrians clear of mud splashes from horse-drawn traffic." www.aboutbristol.co.uk
