Home cooking!

I went on a cookery course run by a very elegant lady called Ida who showed us how to make the popular Gambian dish 'domada' which is a vegetable/fish or chicken stew served with rice. When we arrived at Ida's house she dressed us in Gambian dresses-including the lovely head scarves-then it was off to the market and the beach for the vegetables and fish.

These are just some of the fishing boats that had just arrived laden with fish the likes of which I had never seen before. There were ladyfish, butterfish, mackerel-but not like the ones we have in UK, captainfish, barracuda and others I couldn't name! They were going up the beach in wheel barrows and huge, overflowing bowls trailed by small children with buckets who scooped up the fish that fell out. It was such a blur of colour, activity, noise-and smell!

A fabulous day and a new dish to try out on the family!
