'Still Life' in the Garden
Recently the wind brought down a number of twigs, mostly from our Rowan, and as I was getting up piles of leaves this afternoon I collected some of the twigs together, as I am trying to produce a 'Flora' of the lichen in our Garden. In this collage there are at least 5 species, and so far I have only 'identified' (most of my identifications begin with a query) the largest lichen here, which I think is ?Hypogymnia physodes.
I am tickled by the little red things (probably fruits, maybe another species entirely) on the very green lichen on the right. If they are fruits, then this lichen has two different types of fruit, the green 'cups' with a faintly whiter edge, and the red thingies. I will get out the old mineral and rock specimen microscope from its cupboard, and have a closer look. I really need a tame expert on hand! Oh, and then there are the black spots top left!
