Here there and everywhere

May

May's been a friend of my mother-in-law since they met in a youth hostel with their prospective husbands on the Isle of Arran in 1952. She and her late husband David were at our wedding in 1990 and we've met up at various family get-togethers since then. In fact, I'm just remembering as I write this that I actually met May and David on the same night as I met my mother-in-law for the first time in 1988 in Pitlochry. Bb had forgotten to tell his mum that he was taking his girlfriend back home for the weekend. We turned up on the Friday night, having driven up from Edinburgh and his mum couldn't help but look surprised when I walked in the back door with him! Her first words were, 'You'll be sharing your steak then!' May and David were already at the table in the dining room and I remember there was a bit of shuffling behind the door when they quickly set another place at the table for me! We don't often get the chance to see May when we're back in Scotland these days, but the four of us had a lovely lunch out this afternoon in Ayr and then coffee back at May's. She's lived in the same house for over 60 years and my mum-in-law was saying how nice it is when she's there to be able to look around and see so many familiar things spanning all those years.

Here's May at the lunch table today at the Ellisland Hotel, Ayr.
