Back to the desert
Today we spent all day at the Pushkar Camel Fair. It's hard to describe the huge "showground" packed with people, horses and camels. I was impressed with the level of organisation. There were canopies under which the horses were standing and being fed when we arrived before dawn. The camels were in a different area. I didn't like to see that some of them were hobbled by tying one leg up high and leaving the animal balancing on 3 legs. It looks so uncomfortable. (Apparently they have to stop them running away.)
It was remarkably non smelly and people were working hard to collect every piece of camel dung, which is then dried and used for fuel. It must have been my lucky day because one camel managed to wee on me as I passed by........
There were craft stalls and food stalls, so in some ways it was not dissimilar to many a Northumberland county show.
At the end of the day, camels were led out to the desert for the night. They looked so relaxed as they left the ground and headed for the hills and the sun's low rays bathed them in warm light.
