The Lakes are empty!
A gloriously sunny, if cold, day. We were busy in the house this morning, but decided eventually to get out in the sunshine. Amazing to drive along the shores of Ullswater without being in a trail of other vehicles. Arrived at Glenridding at precisely the wrong time. The sun was just disappearing behind the high fells and it was too early for a sunset.
So here we are looking across Ullswater towards Patterdale, with the sun just catching the tops of the hills and being reflected in the water. It was very still, but very cold.
I had no time to say much about the Jay Raynor talk last night and some people were interested. He does say some quite controversial things about food, such as questioning the worth of buying local and seasonal. He has all the evidence (so he says) to prove that this is not sustainable, is not necessarily good for the environment and is not a model for feeding people in the future. He says things such as buying local at farmers’ markets is more of a life style choice. He was very persuasive, but then he is a skilled, clever and entertaining speaker. I am not going to enter into any argument here, but may bring the subject up again when I have read his book, which incidentally you can get for a few pounds on Amazon.
