Remembrance

We took a stroll round Lambhill Cemetery with Bryan - he was visiting for the weekend and loves a bit of history....

Someone had been around and put poppies at all the stones in this mass grave. There are always flowers there. I counted about 70 people buried here, and only four of them are identified.

On the nights of 13-14 March 1941 there were huge targeted air-raids on the Clyde. It's often called the Clydebank Blitz, where more than 500 people were killed, but in Glasgow many more also died. 83 people died in Kilmun Street next to where I used to live, where a parachute mine dropped on tenements. More than likely some of them are buried here. Two of the identified casualties are from Peel Street in Partick where 50 people died. In the worst incident 110 people were killed in Nelson Street in Tradeston, where a mine dropped between housing and a tram.

Mr HPW's granddad was in the Home Guard stationed in the hills just to the north of here, from where they could see the city burning before the relief effort could begin.
