Wantage FC

This paperback brought back many memories as a youngster with Wantage Football Club. My late father and uncle played for Wantage from 1946 to 1956. The book contains a picture of them when they played for Wantage in the 1949-50 season.

On training nights I used to go along with my father and I was the “ball boy” - not as glamorous as it first sounds. This involved being behind the goalmouth and collecting the balls which missed the goalmouth. I do remember that about 20 metres behind the goal line the ground sloped down to a small stream (ankle deep for a 5 year old) and I seemed to spend most of the time retrieving balls from the stream.
