Ted at Walton Spire!

After ironing and making three cheese and onion pies we thought we would have a short walk before going to see my stepdaughter.

We went a walk past Walton Spire. The huge Walton Cross or spire dominates the spot on Knaves Hill and although the cross dates back to 1840 it's base is ancient.
The cross stands on what is thought to be a battle-stone marking the Battle of Brunanburgh which was fought in 937.

King Athelstan defeated the combined Norse and Celtic forces and this decisive battle established England as one kingdom. It is possible that this huge stone monolith marks the sight of a mass burial ground. From this spot you can see Pendle and Bouldsworth Hills with the Yorkshire peaks Penyghent and Ingleborough in the far distance.

As you can see Ted fell into the mud on his way up there and had to have a bath when we got home.
