Stone Arch

This is the mouth of a limekiln near Gladhouse Reservoir in Midlothian. In the 17th and 18th centuries, lime kilns flourished across lowland Scotland, burning limestone with coal to produce Calcium Oxide, or Quicklime. Alkaline in nature, it was spread on acid soil as an early fertiliser.
