Zero to Five
Today, was the Jordan vs. Uruguay soccer match that was Jordan's one and only shot to making it to the World Cup. This was the last leg of the qualifying matches, but unfortunately Jordan lost (big), 0-5.
The traffic was insane, the streets were filled, cars honked consistently ALL day and night long in excitement and support for Jordan. Every other car was decorated with Jordanian flags and paint, people were dressed up in Jordan's colors in a variety of ways, and extra security surrounded the city. The stadium is only about 8 blocks from my apartment, so needless to say the gun shots rung through the air, horns blasted and fireworks all around us.
It was cool to see how excited everyone was and all of the decorations. Would have been nicer if Jordan had won, but oh well. My professor told us that we wouldn't have to take our test the next day if they won, but she only said that cause she knew they would lose...so we never thought much of it. Wold have been a great surprise though if they had won. From my understanding, Jordan is the only Middle Eastern team that qualified for the World Cups and got the farthest then any other team. Even though they lost, the soccer team gets to go to Uruguay now to play the second game of this match. In theory if the Jordan team wins 6-0 in that game and Uruguay scores nothing then we can win...but no one seems to be holding their breathe for that idea.
