Elysium

Sunset #21

Out in the Tortolita Valley in the middle of the Sonoran Desert tonight. My campfire heating a pot of beans and bacon, and a hot cup of coffee warming my hands. The sun has already disappeared below the mountains and the coyotes, or as we call them bush wolfs, are howling up a ruckus over a nearby ridge. A great horned owl swoops down the valley followed closely by a cooling evening breeze. You can be alone out here in the desert and yet you never feel lonely. I won't be staying the night out here because I have things to do early tomorrow morning. After dinner I'll climb in the Ford pickup and head for home, wishing all the way back that I had stayed the night here.

There is a joke around these parts. That I'm so far out in the middle of nowhere on this deserted desert dirt road that by the time I reach the main highway my headlights will be 5 miles behind me, truth ;o)
